The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat offers passengers a convenient hop-on-hop-off ferry service along the Chao Phraya River where, from its front deck, we watch the city floating past before we exit at the palace stop, squeezing through tiny market stalls crowded with morning shoppers, and arriving at the imposing palace walls, where an official-looking man tells us we won’t gain admittance, dressed so scantily. After another relaxing day at Unawatuna Beach, we discover – by going to the train station in Weligama – that our plan of taking the train back to Colombo won’t be an option, because the one we wanted to take doesn’t transport bicycles, which is understandable considering the crowds jammed into each and every train. Last night after enduring a harrowing nerve-wracking ride into Galle in a tuk tuk, today we decide to take the bus. The bus driver is at least as crazy as the taxi driver was, honking and swerving past every vehicle on the road, but being in the largest vehicle is a great advantage and reason enough to sit back and – try – to enjoy the show.
